He presented himself as genuine by telling a fake story with lot of true expressions and also because of the soap that was lying on the ground got the Gortsby to trust him and give him the sovereign.
Norman Gortsby was not trusting him before but when he saw that the soap about which the young stranger was talking about was lying on the ground he readily trusted him and saw him as a genuine person.
