How did they help newton to arrive at the inverse square law of gravity?

Newton concluded it, because it worked.

It was an explanation which explained Kepler's laws of motion, fitted cometary orbits, the moon etc.

Other simple laws did not.

Since then we have more data and know it is more complex (relativity), but to a very good approximation Newton was right........
