Thomas marvel is busy deciding whether or not to keep a pair of cast away boots when Griffin sees him. marvel is a tramp, has no family and seems to be dim-witted: somebody who would serve Griffin's purpose well. Griffin talks to him and Marvel answers without even turning his head. It's only after a while that he turns around to find there is nobody behind him. He feels he has drunk too much and is imagining things. Griffin has to literally throw things at him to convince him of his reality. Griffin persuades him to help him get food, water and shelter and work for him. He also threatens of dire consequences if he refuses. Marvel went into the bar to escape from the invisible man. After he entered, the policeman who was in the bar shut the door after him and enquired about the problem. Marvel asked to be hidden or else he will be killed by the invisible man. An American who was in the bar too, assured Marvel that he was safe and was curious to see the invisible man. There was banging on the door and when it was not opened the window was smashed. The people on the road outside screamed and ran. The American took out his revolver and told them to open the door. Marvel warned everyone that the invisible man must be prowling around the bar and they should shut all the doors. The bar man noticed the yard door open and got a knife for defence.They heard Marvel squeal and saw him crumpled and struggling at the door. They all rushed to his rescue and tried to catch the invisible man. The police man grabbed his wrist but was hit in the face. The cab man collared something and the bar man caught someone. The invisible man was angry and started hitting everyone. The American fired five bullets in the direction of the invisible man. There was silence everywhere and they thought that the invisible man was dead. Mr Marvel was safe from him now.
