Gradually a large number of priests, workers, artisans, traders, etc. settled near the temple to cater to its needs and those of the pilgrims. Thus grew temple towns. Towns emerged around temples such as those of Bhillasvamin (Bhilsa or Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh), and Somnath in Gujarat.

Urbanization saw expansive growth during the 17th century. This period is also referred to as the medieval period. There was an influx of people from other adjoining countries. Turks, Arabs and Afghans came and settled in various parts of the country. This lead to rapid growth of towns and cities.
