Tsetan was driving the narrator to Mount Kailash in his car; he took a short cut to reach their destination faster. As they went farther towards Mount Kailsh, on the way they had to drive over swathes of snow.  

On the first swathe they encountered, Tsetan took no risk as on one side was a deep gorge. He asked the narrator and Daniel to get down the car. He picked up many handfuls of soil and sprinkled it over the snow. This was to make car tyres get some grip on the slippery snow. Slowly, slowly, Tsetan drove the car over the patch of snow.
