Bismillah Khan started learning to play the shehnai from his uncle. Ali Baksh played shehnai at the Vishwanath Temple and practised in one of the temple rooms at Balaji Ghat.It was used on stage in performances and the credit for that goes to Utsad Bismillah Khan who was a legendary shehnai player and people wanted to hear him play the shehnai. As a five-year old, Bismillah Khan played gilli danda near a pond in the ancient estate of Dumraon in Bihar.Bismillah Khan was born on March 21, 1916, in a musician family of Rasool Bux Kh Father Paigamber Bin was also great Shehnai player. His maternal uncle Ali Bux gave him Shehnai lessons. He practised playing Shehnai' at Balaji and Mangla Maiya Temple and on the bank of river Ganga.
