Ved Mehta’s mother could not come to
terms with the fact that her son had turned blind. She attributed this to sins
committed in her previous birth. She summoned pujaris and hakims to perform
special pujas to restore the lost vision. She also administered some drops
given by them into Ved’s eyes with the hope that they would help him to see
again.
However, Ved Mehta’s father was more practical. He read a lot about blind people and the fate of such people in the society. It was this way that he happened to know about Dr R M Halder who was the Principal of Dadar School for the Blind in Bombay. He contacted Dr Halder who showed interest in Ved and agreed to take personal and special care of Ved if he studied there. Although she did not support her husband’s decision to send Ved there, his mother had confidence in his father’s judgment and agreed to his decision quietly.
