Velan took care of the garden as he considered the plants in it as his own children. He loved the garden and felt proud about it.
- Velan, at the age of eighteen years, went away from his village in a dispute that led his father to slap him.
- Velan got the job of the gardener and he maintained the garden well.
- The owners of the garden kept changing but Velan kept loving the garden and taking care of it.
- However, at the end of the story, the garden had to be cleared which was disheartening for Velan. He had given his entire life to that garden.

Velan had no courage to protest. They ordered him about, sent him on errands, made him wash the cow and lectured to him on how to grow a garden. He detested the whole business and often thought of throwing up his work and returning to his village.
