The growth in urban population and extended export market increased the production of wheat in the late 19th century. Various other factors also contributed to the expansion of wheat production of the United State, for instance, railways (that helped in the transportation of goods from one place to the other), the increasing demand during first World War, and the introduction of machine farming etc.

All these factors led to an increase in the production of Wheat in the United States, and for this, the U.S came to be known as the bread basket.

But over the course of time, overuse and over-exploitation of the soil for farming by machines converted the soil into dust, eventually commencing to dust storms. These smothered the people and animals heading to their death, and jammed the tools and the engines and disparaged them beyond repair. This is how the bread basket turned to a dust bowl in the United States.
