A commitment was generated by The African National Congress (the black majority) & The South African government who represented (the white minority) This was called Groote Schuur Minute which laid the foundations of the peace process that ended Aparthied & racial discrimination.

This historical event occurred on May 4 1990 at The Presidential palace Groote Schuur allowed the government to remove obstacles to the negotiating process including

indemnity from prosecution

returning exiles

release of political prisoners

On August 6 1990 The armed struggle of The African National Congress was finally suspened laying the foundation for a peaceful settlement.

The National Peace Accord on September 14 1991 was the key component in beginning formal peace negotiations which pretty much created the government that exists in South Africa today
