If in a reaction the metal which is reacted with another solution of a metal and it's salt and if after the reaction the solution contains the first metal with the salt and the metal which had it's salt solution is now present in separate solid form then we can say that the metal has displaced another metal from its salt solution.
We generally decide by the reactivity.
The metal which is more reactive will displace the less reactive metal from its salt solution.
To understand better let us take an example.
Fe + CuSo4 —————> FeSO4 + Cu
Here Fe has displaced Cu from its salt solution i.e. CuSO4.
