In biology, cells often make use of diffusion properties to control rates of substances within their walls, using semi-permeable membranes. For instance, cells of plants and of animals use or produce oxygen, carbon dioxide and glucose. In animals, cells require both oxygen and glucose, and give off carbon dioxide.
