Although most of the marine and aquatic animals have gills for respiration under water, there are quite a few creatures that do not have gills. These animals follow other methods of respiration for survival.
1. Whales - Do not have gills but have lungs for respiration. They are mammals. They cannot stay and breathe underwater for long durations. They come up to the surface occasionally and breathe through their blowholes.
2. Dolphins - Same as whales. They respire through their lungs. They come to the surface of the water and inhale oxygen from the atmosphere.
3. Lungfish - Have lungs and use the air for oxygen requirements.
4. Many gastropods have lungs or gills.
5. Turtles - They have special pairs of flank muscles that regulate the inspiration and expiration processes.
6. many aquatic arthropods have a plastron that assists in respiration.
