How do antiseptics differ from disinfectants? Give one example of each.

An antiseptic is used on living tissues and cells to destroy any types of infections which may be living on the tissue. Disinfectants are meant to destroy microorganisms which can infect nonliving objects. Common antiseptics include mouthwash, and yeast infection treatment creams.

Antiseptics atmre chemical substances which prevent the growth of microorganisms and may even kill them but are not harmful to human at animal tissues. Example are Dettol and savlon. They are generally applied on wounds, ulcers, cuts and diseased skin surface. Furacin and Siframycin are well-known antiseptic creams.

Disinfectants are chemical substances which kill microorganisms but are not safe to be applied to the living tissues. There are few used to kill microorganisms present in the toilets, drains, floors, etc. Some common examples of disinfectants are phenols are chlorine.
