Hi mate

Question

How do aquatic plants and animals get carbon dioxide and oxygen for their survival in water?

Answer

  • Gaseous oxygen, normally configured as O2, is soluable in water.

  • So is Carbon Dioxide, CO2. Underwater plants take in dissolved CO2 from the water and release O2 into the water.

  • Fish take in dissolved O2 through their gills and release CO2 through their gills.

  • There is also a lot of exchange of O2 and CO2 at the waters surface that is exposed to the atmosphere.

  • 3/5ths of the worlds oxygen production is done in the earths oceans by algae.
