if an atom loses or donates electrons it becomes positively charged if the atom accepts or gains electrons it becomes negatively charged

Following points will help you :-

●An atom is electrically neutral

●Protons are Positively charged

●Electrons are Negatively charged

●Neutrons are Positively charged

In an atom the no.of electrons=no.of protons so that the negative and positive charges cancel each other and the atom is neutral
.But if an atom loses 1 or more electron it becomes positively charged as there are more protons and if it gains more electrons it becomes negatively charged as there are more electrons .Such atoms are also called Ions.A positive ion is known as cation and a negative ion is known as anion.

P.S:-An atom cannot lose protons as they are inside the nucleus .It can only lose or gain electrons .

❤hope it helps you ❤
