Autotrophs obtain their nutrients and energy by harnessing energy from sunlight to convert ‘carbon dioxide’ from the atmosphere and ‘water from the soil’ into complex organic compounds or glucose.

Explanation:

  • Autotrophs are primary producers which can manufacture their own food.
  • This process is known as photosynthesis. For photosynthesis to occur, autotrophs need to express a pigment called chlorophyll.
  • Plants are usually autotrophs, but there are algae and fungi that can also ‘produce their own food’. They are the producers of the food chain.
