how do black holes collide

When two galaxies collide, the super massive black holes at their centers do not hit head-on, but would shoot past each other if some mechanism did not bring them together.
At this distance, they form a bound, binary system which must lose orbital energy somehow before the black holes can merge.
Hope you got it.
