There are motor end plates or neuro muscular junctions which connect the neutrons(nerves) of the nervous system to the muscles.
During transmission of impulses, when the impulse reaches the motor end plate, neurotransmitters are released which in turn stimulate other reactions like release of Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum which unmasks the sites of troponin proteins on actin filaments which further proceeds by the method of the sliding filament theory.

Answer:
They are connected to bones by tough, cord-like tissues called tendons, which allow the muscles to pull on bones. ... These muscles hold the skeleton together, give the body shape, and help it with everyday movements (they are known as voluntary muscles because you can control their movement).
