They are only useful in so much as they have an accuracy factor, ie a first person or primary source Primary source - Wikipedia origin and with this the reputation and character of that source has to be considered, ie who funded the work, affiliations of the individual, biases, for what audience was the work produced, etc. For example, the writings of julius caesar were mentioned regarding the druids and we know from other roman writers that this is nonsense and written as roman propaganda, see my answer here for further information John Templar's answer to What are the three main roles of a druid in celtic society*?
