How do changes in temperature help in weathering rocks

The change in temperature affects weathering rocks.
When the temperature is hot the outer layer of rocks expand and when it is cold the outer layer of rocks contracts. This process of Expansion and contraction causes stress on the rocks and the outer layer of rock peels out and hence weathering takes place.
