By seeing a coin of a particular age we can tell a great deal about that age like their religious belief, political administration etc. When one sees a different country's coin in our country we can understand that there was trade between the two countries. Coins also tell us about the economic status of the kingdom for example when one sees coins of gold its clear that the kingdom was economically strong else if we see coins of any cheap material its evident that the kingdom is economically weak.Coins also tell us about the ruler of that kingdom and his importance in the society.By seeing a coin of the Mughal age where on Jahangir's coin one could see the name og Jahangir and his wife NoorJahan this tells us how much power women had at that time.
Coins are the medium of exchange, can only seen in a developed society with centralized administration. It will help to find out the genealogy of the rulers, who issued it. Further it will help for the chronological study of history. Also will help to understand the metal technology of the particular period. That is why numismatics is developing side by side with history.
