continents rest on massive plates known as tectonic plates. when these plates move, they cause continental drift.

ramachandra1: but what makes tectinic plates to move?
ramachandra1: tectonic
ruth24: the tectonic plates are always moving. this tectonic activity include seafloor spreading. during seafloor spreading, molten rock rises from within the Earth and adds new seafloor to the edges of the old. As the seafloor grows wider, the continents on opposite sides of the ridge move away from each other.
