some plants have a waxy cuticle (impermeable  to water to reduce water loss)

in extremely hot weather the stomata ( pores on the lower epidermis) close to reduce water loss

some plants have stomata in 'pits' in the epidermis to reduce water loss

In some plants water is stored in the stem and not in leaves. this reduce the level of transpiration.
