The Indian subcontinent throughout history had a number of names such as Bharat, Aryavarta, Riva, Hindustan and India. These names have reflected the historical period during which they use greatly, for instance,  The arrival of Aryans in India named the land occupied by them as Aryavarta. Bharat was a clan during the Rig Vedic times on which the land they owned came to be known as Bharat and thus India during the Rig Vedic time was known as Bharat. Riva was another name of the Indian Subcontinent. The Persian invaders gave the name Hindustan (the land of Hindus) to the Indian Subcontinent. However, the British officials found it difficult to pronounce Hindustan thus they gave name India to the Indian Subcontinent.
