Sudden moments below the earth's surface sometimes cause the ground to shake. The shaking of the earth is called an earthquake.

Earthquakes are very destructive. They cause great damage to life and property.

Earthquakes usually last for less than a minute. We can measure intensity of an earthquake on the Richter scale. An earthquake below 2.0 on Richter scale cannot be severe while one above 5.0 can cause serious damage.
