by gaining or losing electrons

for example sodium as 1 electron more so it loses electrons and attains octect

by gaining or losing electron from the outer most shell. an element can attain its octet..

for example.

1st. Na^+ here Na loose one electron from outermost shell and attain octet.

2nd. cl^- here by loosing one electron..
