Ethylene is a plant hormone which is in gaseous state. It is formed by the breakdown of an amino acid  called methoinine. It helps in ripening of fruits in a plant. When the shoot of a plant hits an obstacle,at that point ethylene production increases increasing the size of shoot and this helps the shoot to overcome that obstacle.Ethylene production increases when the plant faces lateral stress .This increase in ethylene production will increase the size of plant and makes the plant sturdy and now the plant can face that lateral stress. In this way ethylene helps plants.Ethylene has many other roles in plant growth.
