Farmers do this by carrying out tests on the soil available on their farm to find out the soil type, soil texture and the soil nutrient. Once the farmer establishes this, he/she compares what is available in the soil/on the farm and the kind of soil conditions and nutrients the plant requires. This helps the farmer choose what crop to plant in which soil. For example the farmer can establish that a soil such as clay retains a lot of water, he/she might decide to plant a crop that requires a lot of water like rice on that piece of land.
