Trees reduce flood risk from the top to bottom. Lots of raindrops that land on leaves evaporate straight into the air- so less water reaches the ground. And, leaves intercept rainfall, slowing the rate that water flows into rivers and reducing the risk it'll burst its banks. ... Trees are a great way to combat flooding.

When plants grow in an area, the roots of plants dig deep in to the soil and create space between soil particles. When it rains in highlands, water that flows downhill gets drained into the space created by the root system of plants. Due to this, chance of flooding is greatly reduced.

Planting more trees, shrubs and grasses in our gardens would help to intercept greater amounts of stormwater, causing water to be transpired back into the atmosphere through the vegetation. Allowing mulch and leaf litter to accumulate, or using practices such as differential mowing, could also help to reduce runoff.

they retain excess rainwater reduce the surface rain off and hence reduce the damage caused by floods
