how do frozen water between cracked rocks cause cracks

When water freezes in the cracks, it increases its volume due to which it can exert pressure in the rock. this pressure causes rocks to disintegrate. thus the cracks get widen. this is what is called weathering.this breaks down the rocks into smaller particles.
