  • Nitrous acid HNO2, the oxidation state of the nitrogen is +3. so it can be oxidised to +5 oxidation state or reduced to lesser oxidation state. So only HNO3 acts only as an oxidising agents but HNO2 acts as both an oxidising and reducing agent
