The swelling of guard cells due to absorption of water causes opening of stomatal pores while shrinking of guard cells closes the pores. Opening and closing of stomata occurs due to turgor changes in guard cells.

The opening and swelling of the stomatal pole is the function of gaurd cells. The gaurd cells swell when the water flows into them, causing the stomatal pore to open. Similarly the pore closes if the gaurd cells shrink due to loss of water.
