In plants, photosynthesis occurs to make food. In the plant cells, the chloroplast is the food making machine to produce sugars whereas the mitochondria is the food processing factory to produce energy.

Photosynthesis consists of two stages:

Light-dependent stage/ Light stage

Light-independent stage/ Dark stage/ Calvin cycle

The light-dependent stage produces the raw materials (NAD+ and ATP) to be utilised in the light-independent stage. NAD+ is reduced to NADH/H+ and ATP is dephosphorylated to ADP to release energy for the formation of phosphoglyceraldehyde (PGAL) from oxaloacetate to be used in the production of glucose! Excess glucose is converted to starch and stored in starch grains in the cell.
