The narrator makes fun of the Waterloo railway. He says that at Waterloo nobody knows from which platform a train will start, or where a train is going, or anything else about a train. The porters, the station master and the superintendent told different platform numbers for the eleven five train to Kingston. They went to number three platform and asked the authorities who said that they thought that the train there was the Southampton express, or the Windsor loop. But they were sure it was not the Kingston train. When they went to the engine driver, he said that he was not sure if he was the 11.5 for Kingston but he was confident that he was the 9.32 for Virginia Water, or the 10 am express for the Isle of Wight or somewhere in that direction. He said that they would know when they reached there. So the three men gave him half a crown quietly and begged him to be the 11.5 for Kingston.

In this way the three men reached Kingston by the London and South Western Railway. Later they got to know that it was actually the Exeter mail.
