Himalayan rivers are mostly glacier fed though these rivers also carry water from rains. They are fed by glacier melt in the summer and this is the reason they are perennial - carry water even in the dry months. Ganga, Yamuna, Kosi, Gomti, Brahmaputra, Indus, Teesta are all fed by glaciers. The peninsular rivers are rain fed and while many of the bigger rivers like Godavari, Cauvery and Krishna carry water in summer, this is because they are also fed by springs that are replenished during the monsoon. Smaller peninsular rivers that are not fed by springs dry up in summer.
