The poem cold within depicts many discriminative feelings against people of other race, caste, religion etc. The poet himself was an Afro -American Negro and he wrote this poetry when discrimination was at its peak. It describes the prejudice feeling of humans . The log of wood personifies their sin. They might have sacrificed the log of birch and had survived ,but the insensitivity in their heart, prevents them to do so.The first man was a believer of " racial prejudice".The second man suffered from "Religious Intolerance". The poor man had an "envy for the rich". The rich man was full of "greed and stringiness". The black man was of a "ravenous and revengeful attitude".The last one was a businessman, who did nothing except for gain. He lacked "generosity". This shows that each of them had a discriminative feeling for each other.
