Common family law subjects include divorce or annulment, child custody and visitation rights, child support payments, and spousal support/alimony. Family law specifically deals with children in regards to adoption, guardianship, state child protection, and domestic violence.

Under the Special Marriage Act 1954 and the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, there is a distinction between a void and voidable marriage. The Indian Divorce Act 1869 only provides grounds on which marriages are void, but provides no grounds on which a marriage is voidable

In the Constitution of India, the word "Hindu" has been used in some places to denote persons professing any of these religions: Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism or Sikhism. This however has been challenged by the Sikhs and by neo-Buddhists who were formerly Hindus.
