There were several inscriptions made during the period of Gupta kings recording their victories and noble deeds.

According to these inscriptions, the Gupta kings were charitable in nature. They donated generously for religious and other philanthropic purposes.

The Sanchi inscription during the rule of Chandragupta Maurya recorded large donations given to Buddhist monasteries. Tumain inscription of King Kumaragupta mentions the monetary and material support given for construction of temples during the time. The Katni Copper Plate of Jayanatha, during King Uccakalpa, mentions donation of village Kalabhikundaka, to the people. The Tosham rock inscription of 4th – 5th century has mention of large donations to Buddhist monasteries and for construction of several water tanks.
