Insects

  • The antennae of insects work as their feelers.
  • Their antennae or feelers not only allow them to smell something, but also allows them to feel a surface or an object, sense coldness or hotness, detect sounds.
  • The insect antennae has three section :- scape, pedicel and flagellomeres. Scape helps the insect to move its antenna. It is attached to the head. Pedicel has muscle connections which allows the insect to control the movements of its antenna. Flagellomeres are small segments which contains the sensory cells of the insect.
  • The antenna of the insect has olfactory receptors which allows them to detect odors. They also use their antenna and sensory systems to sense the changes in the atmosphere like feeling the change in humidity etc.

Answer:

Insects do this with the pair of antennae on their heads. But insects don't only use their antennae to smell. They can also use them to feel the surface of an object, sense hot and cold, listen to sounds or detect the movement of air or wind. Insects have paired antennae so they can smell in stereo.
