The force of friction always acts in a direction opppsite to that of the applied force.Friction is due to the irregularities on the surface of the objects in contact. The force of friction increases if the surface areas are pressed harder. So we can say that rough surfaces are result for friction. This is because the roughness of the path having curves, irregular heights traps the moving body. For example, when a car is moving, inorder to stop it we need to apply brakes. The rubbers act for stopping but friction does the most work. The irregularities on the rubber act as friction and also the roads. The average height of irregularities also depends on the friction.
