How does a leader emerge from a group of people?

Leaders can show up in different ways. Sometimes, a person with leadership skills quietly goes about showing leadership in their everyday actions. They take responsibility beyond basic expectations, they show integrity, empathy for others, communicate effectively and look for effective problem solutions. They are able to make good decisions and establish resonant relationships with others. They are aware of how their emotions affect their decisions and the way they interact with others; and they are self-aware. They are able to see the 'big picture' and act accordingly. Often such leaders are identified because their colleagues or group members look to them for advice and follow the lead they show.

Leaders can decide to take a visible leadership role by developing their skills and letting it be known they want to be promoted to a leadership role. They exhibit the behaviours and act according to what is valued in the organization they work in.

Truly showing up as a leader is not about the prestige or power of such a role but it is about being a person who exhibits leadership skills when they see that is needed.
