A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It is a pān junction diode that emits light when activated. When a suitable current is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons.
Not only do LED holiday lights consume less electricity, they also have the following advantages:Safer: LEDs are much cooler than incandescent lights, reducing the risk of combustion or burnt fingers.Sturdier: LEDs are made with epoxy lenses, not glass, and are much more resistant to breakage

LED are semiconductors. As electrons pass through this type of semiconductor, it turns into light. Compared to incandescent and CFL bulbs , LED lights are more efficient at turning energy into light . Therefore less of the energy radiates from the bulb as heat.
