leguminous plants have a bacteria in their roots that is known as rhiobium, this bacteria can convert gaseous nitrogen into liquid nitrogen that can be used by the plants.
after growing of crops or while they are growing the rhizobium keeps converitng nitrogen into liquid form, hence plants can use it and the nitrogen in the soil is not depleted, keeping the soil fertile
