The leguminous plants have a bacteria named Rhizobium present in their roots. This bacteria converts very strongly bonded Atmospheric Nitrogen into soluble compounds of Nitrogen ( Nitrates). These soluble compounds of nitrogen are very important for the plant for their growth. This process is called Nitrogen Fixation and it replenishes the soil with lost nitrogen.
