The greatest difference in duration of day and night is at the poles, where the amount of daylight can range from zero to twenty-four hours, depending on the time of the year. As you move from the poles to the Equator, the change in the amount of sunlight from season to season decreases. Even though the poles receive twenty-four hours of sunlight one day per year, the rays are very indirect,  which means the amount of energy (especially heat energy) is reduced greatly.
