when moon passes exactly behind the earth and into its shadow a lunar eclipse occurs. It happens when the sun,moon and the earth come exactly or very closely aligned.

so, LUNAR ECLIPSE TAKES PLACE WHEN THE MOON IS BEHIND THE EARTH i.e THE EARTH IS IN BETWEEN THE MOON AND THE SUN. SO , WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT, SOMETIMES THE MOON IS IN SUCH A POSITION THAT EARTH FORMS ITS SHADOW ON MOON, GIVING A REDDISH EFFECT ON THE MOON. THERE ARE 2 TYPES LUNAR ECLIPSES- ANNULAR AND PENUMBRAL.
