In order to prove that traits are inherited independently, Mendel performed an experiment in which he took peas having two contrasting traits i.e. he took round and yellow seeds and wrinkled and green seeds. This cross was known as dihybrid cross. After crossing them, he found out that the resulting offsprings had new phenotypes i.e. round green seeds and wrinkled yellow seeds. These two phenotypes were not present in the parent seed. So, this experiment or cross suggested that traits occur independently of each other and they can go with any trait in future generations.
