Mendel showed it by his experimet. He took one tall plant and one short plant produced F1 progeny from them,in this there were only tall plants. And then he made Parents plant and F1 generation to reproduce by self pollination. The progeny of parents plant were tall but the progeny of F1 generation was not tall at at all one quarter of them were shortthis showe that both tallness and shortness trait wereinherited in F1 progeny but only tall trait was expressed. So the trait which was expressed was dominant and the other one which was not expressed was recessive.

Hope it will be helpful.
