Oxygen is second highest electro-negative compound after Fluorine(F) in periodic table. Because of this, it gain electrons easily from other element/compound and form a compound with that element/compound which donate electron easily. Metals have tendency to donate electron easily as they have low ionization energy. Because of high electro-negativity, oxygen gain that electron easily from the metal and form a bond with metals. This is the reason why oxygen form a bond with metals. Consider the following reaction of Sodium with Oxygen.4Na + O2 ———→ 2Na2O

Example-:

1)When magnesium burns in air,it combines with the oxygen of air to form magnesium oxide(basic oxide)Magnesium +oxygen ——–> Magnesium Oxide2 Mg(s) + O2 (g) —–> 2MgO(s)Magnesium oxide dissolves in water to form magnesium hydroxide solution.
